ArenaNet announced yesterday that select retail stores will now be selling Gem Cards for Guild Wars 2. Players can purchase Gem Cards and use them in-game to receive Gems without having to utilize a credit card. Here’s the official announcement:

“You can purchase gems in-game from the Black Lion Trading Company, but starting this week you can also purchase Guild Wars 2 gems in real life at select retailers. These cards, which make a great gift, contain a serial code that can be redeemed in Guild Wars 2 for gems.

If gem cards aren’t in stock at your favorite retailer yet, be sure to ask if and when they’ll be arriving.

For redemption instructions and additional information about gems, visit the Guild Wars 2 Support page.”

Update 10/17: ArenaNet has released a list of retailers where Gem Cards can be purchased.

Crafting Tip: Mystic Salvage Kits http://www.guildwars2junkies.com/2012/09/12/crafting-tip-mystic-salvage-kits/ http://www.guildwars2junkies.com/2012/09/12/crafting-tip-mystic-salvage-kits/#comments Wed, 12 Sep 2012 20:00:43 +0000 Serrain http://www.guildwars2junkies.com/?p=2137

For crafters or salvagers looking for ways to get the most bang from your Guild Wars 2 time, here’s an interesting item to consider: Mystic Salvage Kits. These yellow-quality kits raise the chances of finding rarer materials by 25% and recovering upgrades by 80%. The item recovery stats are the same as the stats on Master’s Salvage Kits, but with an interesting twist– they come in stacks of 250. Yes, 250! Out on a long farming session or WvWvW adventure and often run into bag space issues? Mystic Salvage Kits may be your answer.

There’s a slight catch, naturally. Mystic Salvage Kits must be made at the Mystic Forge, and require the following materials: 1 Fine Salvage Kit, 1 Journeyman’s Salvage Kit, 1 Master’s Salvage Kit, and 3 Mystic Forge Stones. Mystic Forge Stones are available in the Black Lion Trading Company Gem Store, which makes forging these kits a little complicated. Still, it’s an interesting option.

Check out this video, where Dontain talks about Mystic Salvage Kits.

What do you think– worth the Gems, or no?

Putting the Monthly Sub Fee to Shinier Uses http://www.guildwars2junkies.com/2012/08/20/putting-the-monthly-sub-fee-to-shinier-uses/ http://www.guildwars2junkies.com/2012/08/20/putting-the-monthly-sub-fee-to-shinier-uses/#comments Mon, 20 Aug 2012 13:18:15 +0000 Serrain http://www.guildwars2junkies.com/?p=1728

As we round the final bend toward Guild Wars 2′s launch, it’s impossible to not notice the rising storm of excitement, anticipation, and– well, there’s no sense in beating around the bush– hype. There, I said it. GW2 is carrying a lot of hype right now. MMO players are eager for something new, something shiny, and most importantly– something different. As most modern MMO fans know, hype can be a risky business, but GW2 has a lot of things going right for it so far. The combination of the game’s dynamic event system, dynamic leveling adjustment system, WvWvW feature, cooperative world system, and non-trinity combat system is a fairly innovative step in the industry, and a large reason for the hype.

Another innovative step is the move away from the classic subscription model. Most MMORPGs these days launch with a subscription model that may or may not prove the test of time, and if the game ends up slipping into a free-to-play model, many players feel frustrated with the model slip no matter their stance. Why? Because the developers will often veil the changes in flowery, positive PR lingo, change the way content patches are added to the game, and in general– change the game dramatically. Gamers prefer their games and development teams at face value– and that’s where Guild Wars 2 comes in.

ArenaNet has taken the time to design a microtransaction shop that will hopefully be fair to players, great for the game’s economy, and profiting to the company. The Black Lion Trading Company, Guild Wars 2′s in-game cash shop (also known as the gem store), wasn’t hastily thrown in to make up for eight straight months of losses. It’s been a stable, well-known feature of the game, and during the months of beta we have been able to provide our feedback on the items available and the current state of the feature. ArenaNet plans on this system being stable for years to come. Because of this fact, we are hopefully less likely to see sudden changes such as items added that border on pay-to-win. For MMO veterans, that’s peace of mind.

Players are well aware of the fact that they may have to purchase items like additional bank slots from the gem store, but since they’re able to use in-game gold to purchase gems, they may not mind doing so. They may also not mind doing so because they know what to expect of ArenaNet’s business model. They know they won’t have to pay a subscription fee for half a year then turn around and weigh pros and cons. They won’t have to pay a monthly subscription fee at all. And that, frankly, is reason enough to celebrate, especially for those of us who enjoy multiple games.

Without the need to pay for a monthly subscription, there’s also the fact that many players will be willing to put out a little cash toward items and features that truly interest them. Again, the feature’s shown at face value. What you see is what you get, and that’s pretty reassuring these days. I know that personally, if I enjoy a game and don’t have to jump through hoops to enjoy myself, I’m more than willing to show my support of the game and grab some goodies along the way.

In fact, I’ve been asking myself what I would consider purchasing first in GW2′s Black Lion Trading Company once the game launches. Let’s say for instance, I wanted to take what I’d normally spend on a one-month subscription to an MMORPG (usually around $15), and put that money to good use in the gem shop. What would I buy first? We don’t know the exact cost of gems, of course, since the market will fluctuate, but I can come up with a priority list of sorts.

Oh, and in case you’d like to take a look at the gem store items and prices available so far (current from the last BWE), please see our list from BWE2 and the changes to BWE3. Items may, of course, change previous to launch still.

Priority 1: Character slots – Yeah, I like alts. This will probably be my first purchase. I like to get all the names, races, and crafting disciplines for my alts set up before I get too far with one character in a new game, generally. I imagine I’ll have 6 characters total, although some may just be crafters.

Priority 2: Bag slots – I hate running out of bag space, so I see this as a “relatively soon” purchase for me, too. Bank tabs might also be useful at some point, yet I probably won’t need them until later in my alt career.

Pirority 3: Pirate Captain’s Outfit (shown in title image on a female sylvari) – Yarr. I can’t help myself. The inner RP’er in me who doesn’t RP often enough loves how it looks on a female charr.

Priority 4: Mystic Keys – I enjoy lockboxes of random goodies, and during the BWEs, I was able to grab some keys while leveling normally, but it’d be nice to have a stack on hand.

After that, I’d probably start looking at collectible minis and possibly some dyes, Mystic Forge items, or Transmutation Stones. And yes, I know I don’t list any of the interesting Boosts GW2 has, but I enjoy taking my time leveling, so I don’t foresee experience or even karma being an issue for me.

How about you? What’s your priority list look like? Feel free to chime in below in the comments section.

BWE 3 Black Lion Trading Company Changes http://www.guildwars2junkies.com/2012/07/23/bwe-3-black-lion-trading-company-changes/ http://www.guildwars2junkies.com/2012/07/23/bwe-3-black-lion-trading-company-changes/#comments Mon, 23 Jul 2012 14:00:52 +0000 Serrain http://www.guildwars2junkies.com/?p=1515

For those of us who are diving headfirst into Guild Wars 2 from other MMOs that don’t feature microtransaction/cash shops, the idea of such a shop in GW2 may still taste a little bitter on our tongues. We’ve all heard the horror stories of games drifting to unwanted pay-to-win territories, and we’re all hoping that ArenaNet avoids going anywhere near that path. Will the company succeed? I sure hope so. They’re doing some excellent things with their cash shop. Still, my eyes remain sharp to the changes being made to it. As a result, I’ve been tracking the shop’s differences between beta weekends.

Every beta weekend event has seen some pretty large changes to the in-game gem/cash shop. Since BWE2, it now sports a new name: Black Lion Trading Company. For those interested in tracking the changes made along with me, here are the changes made between BWE2 and BWE3.

First off, the largest change. We finally have a preview section! All areas of the game, in fact, have a preview option now, which is great. Right-clicking and selecting the option enables it throughout the game, but in the Trading Company window, it shows up naturally on the left side of the window upon viewing any of the clothing items. Here’s what it looks like in-game:

Shown is a female sylvari in the Pirate Captain’s Outfit. All items in the Style tab will pop up the preview window.

Now, for the other changes. They’ll be organized by the tab they’re located in. For a list of the shop items that remain unchanged from BWE2, check here.

Style tab

  • Both types of Transmutation Stones are now in Consumables instead of Style.
  • New item: Boxing Gloves [300 gems]
    • Hand Clothing
These exaggerated boxing gloves give you over the top air-boxing abilities. SLAM! POW! WHACK! Town clothes cannot be worn in combat. Account Bound.

Consumable tab

  • New item: Cow Finisher [75 gems, 5 for 275]
    • When activated, your character will drop a cow on your enemies to finish them off in PvP and WvW. Lasts for one hour. Account Bound.
  • New item: Tournament Ticket [5 for 75 gems]
    • Used for certain tournaments which require an entry fee. This item is free for testing purposes only. Trophy. Account Bound.

Services tab (previously Support)

  • Blag Slot Expansion moved to Upgrades tab.
  • Perfect Salvage Kit is renamed to Black Lion Salvage Kit.

Upgrades tab (previously Account)

  • Contains both Bag Slot Expansion and Bank Tab Expansion
  • Temporary removal of Character Slot Expansion
    • I looked into this one. The removal was just for BWE3. Here is the ArenaNet dev quote: “Yes, there are some known issues regarding character slots with this build, so we took them off the store. They will be available at launch.”

Boosts tab

  • New item: Glory Booster [75 gems, 5 for 275]
Gain an additional 50% Glory for the next one hour.

All-in-all, ArenaNet’s changes seem acceptable and fair so far. We haven’t seen a major addition of game-changing items (hopefully we never will) and that’s definitely a step in the right direction.

Black Lion Trading Company: The Updated Gem Store http://www.guildwars2junkies.com/2012/06/11/black-lion-trading-company-the-updated-gem-store/ http://www.guildwars2junkies.com/2012/06/11/black-lion-trading-company-the-updated-gem-store/#comments Mon, 11 Jun 2012 13:13:14 +0000 Serrain http://www.guildwars2junkies.com/?p=1165

The Gem Store has seen a facelift of sorts since the first beta weekend event. This past weekend, we saw its new version, now known as the Black Lion Trading Company. A good amount of the items are the same, but there have been a couple significant changes. The store UI itself has been redone, for one thing. The new UI is easier to navigate, and the art is more in-tune with the rest of Guild Wars 2′s UI artistic elements. Most items have new graphics, and some have new names as well.

Among the added items is the rumored character slot expansion, some nifty glasses and sunglasses, a partial Trading Post summon item, a multiple-buff booster pack, and a “Box o’ Fun”. The Style tab, especially, is beginning to expand. Read on for more information!

Five Things I’d Like to See On the Gem Store http://www.guildwars2junkies.com/2012/06/01/five-things-id-like-to-see-on-the-gem-store/ http://www.guildwars2junkies.com/2012/06/01/five-things-id-like-to-see-on-the-gem-store/#comments Fri, 01 Jun 2012 13:03:44 +0000 Shoeby http://www.guildwars2junkies.com/?p=1055

I’m in the same boat as a lot of other people, since the bulk of my MMO experiences have been games that require a monthly subscription, I have virtually no experience buying items from a cash shop for use in my gaming. The Guild Wars 2 Gem Shop will be the first time that I’m actually planning on plunking down some cash to make my gaming experience better. I logged into the game and started browsing the available items, and I couldn’t help but feel a little underwhelmed by what was in there. Now I know that we’re still quite some time out from launch, so I figured what better time than the present to put out some ideas about some new items for the Gem Shop. For those of you who aren’t aware of the items for sale, my colleague Laura Hardgrave wrote an outstanding article titled Previewing the Gem Store. In that article she outlines all the items that currently exist in the Gem Store, and she also touches on the fact that there are no “Pay-to-Win” items in the Gem Shop as well. Keeping with the idea that the Gem Store shouldn’t contain these “Pay-to-Win” items, here are 5 things that I’d like to see on the Guild Wars 2 Gem Store.

1. Name Change Service. This one is pretty much a given, eventually. We all know someone out there who names a character something that they end up regretting later, most MMORPG’s provide this service via the web. Instead of being done outside of the game though, I’d like to see it implemented via the Gem Store. Arenanet could totally have fun with it and make the purchase give you an in-game item called a Certificate of Name Change, and then that is taken to a city clerk or something where you can then enter a new name. Because of the Gold to Gem conversion, this gives players who can’t or even won’t pay for the service the opportunity to use it as well.

2. Party Boxes. I know that you’re probably asking yourself, What is a Party Box? Well, it’s a celebration in a box, quite literally. Let’s say they have an item called a Wedding Party Box, that item would in theory be a box that a player would open, and in the box is 2 rings, 20 pieces of wedding cake, 20 glasses of champagne, and a Certificate of Name Change. I’m not really much of a role player, but I love the idea of creating a world where people have the tools to do events on their own. If I were walking through Divinity’s Reach and came across players having an in-game wedding ceremony, I’d probably stop and watch for a bit. Then if they passed out cake and champagne?

In a word. Awesome. We can even take the idea a step further, and I’m not sure that this is even possible in the game environment, but if instead of 20 pieces of wedding cake and 20 glasses of champagne, the Party Box gave you an item that when clicked gave everyone within 20 yards a piece of cake and glass of champagne in their inventory, this would save lots and lots of trading amongst the guests. Let’s not limit the idea to weddings though, Party Boxes could be created for all kinds of events including Birthdays or even Holidays, any time is a great time to celebrate with a Party Box. Fireworks, Birthday Hats, In game Piñata? Yes, Yes, Yes… I think all of these would be great flair to add to the game. The idea has the added benefit of adding all of these items individually to the Gem Store to boost the item count, because I’m certain that there would be interest in purchasing items from within the boxes on an individual basis.

3. Illusions. While I’m certain there will be tons and tons of costumes available for purchase, I think being able to completely transform into something else is a fun idea. There are currently items in game that modify your character model for a few minutes. I was fortunate enough to acquire something that turned me into a puddle of blue goo. The downside of these illusions in their current implementation is that you cannot engage in combat, or craft while they are active. Additionally, they disappear upon leaving your current city. While I understand complications involved with combat while under the effects of an illusion, I certainly see no reason why crafting cannot be done while morphed. I think the odds are very good that we will see these in the future, but the real question is how limited the player will be while transformed.

4. Asuran Trading Post Portal. While you can buy and sell your items out in the field, you must travel to a Trading Post NPC to pick up your items or gold. This item would allow you to summon a Trading Post NPC to your current location. Adding this to the shop seems like a no brainer to me, as there is already an Asuran Banker Portal in the Gem Shop. I think that this would be even more popular than the Banker Portal, as most players will probably spend more time buying things from the Trading Post, rather than pulling items from their bank. Giving players this item would be a great time saver for those people unwilling to leave their hunting or crafting spot.

5. Crafting Conveniences. There are 2 parts to this, and I’ve lumped them together because they both feel a bit iffy on whether or not players will ever get the option to purchase. The first convenience I’d like to see would be the ability to learn more than 2 crafting disciplines. Why are characters limited to 2 crafting disciplines in the first place? I’ve always felt that this was a silly game mechanic. Any devoted crafter would make alternate characters solely for the purposes of getting into other crafting markets. This arbitrary crafting limit is even more ridiculous in Guild Wars 2, where there is no level requirement in place(that I know of) to limit how far your level 1 character can advance their crafting skill. Let’s just cut the nonsense on this and give me a way to remove this restriction. While the time savings is trivial as switching between characters doesn’t take too long, it’s a convenience thing, I’d just like to keep it all on one main character and not have to switch characters whenever I wanted to make something new. The second crafting convenience, and this is a real long shot, since I imagine it would have to be hardcoded into the game, would be to allow crafting from the bank. Not having this in the game by default is a bit baffling to me as it is a fantastic convenience. This to me would be the one convenience that I would gladly pay handsomely for.

I hope that as we get closer to launch we’ll see a wider selection of items available for purchase via the Gem Shop. As it currently stands, the selection is a bit limited, and I’m sure that it will expand greatly in the months to come. I’m sure we’ll see plenty of costumes, hairstyle changes, and other cosmetic options for our characters, as they seem to be fairly standard offerings. I’m sure there are plenty of fantastic ideas about things to add to the Gem Shop, and I’d love to hear more about what you’d like to see up for sale.

Previewing the Gem Store http://www.guildwars2junkies.com/2012/05/07/previewing-the-gem-store/ http://www.guildwars2junkies.com/2012/05/07/previewing-the-gem-store/#comments Mon, 07 May 2012 13:00:59 +0000 Serrain http://www.guildwars2junkies.com/?p=781

Guild Wars 2′s Gem Store is one of the most debated topics for curious, prospective players. It’s easy to understand why. Many “free-to-play” MMORPGs offer similar shops, usually known as cash shops or microtransaction shops, and some of the items sold end up severely impacting the game for all types of players. The term often used for these games is “pay to win”, and it’s fairly accurate in most cases. The players with the most shop-bought items generally end up at the top of the food chain, which is unfair for everyone else. The notion of GW2 going this same route leaves a bad taste in many gamers’ mouths.

But will ArenaNet go that route? Many other games have made microtransaction shops that don’t contain items that have such a huge impact on gameplay, and merely contain novelty, vanity, cosmetic, and collectable items. And let’s face it, shops like this do well in popular games, because players love items that bring character to their characters. Character is good in MMOs. Unbalanced godly items are not.

ArenaNet seems to realize this, thankfully, and their intentions seem well-placed. The early announcements regarding the Gem Store voiced the same concern many of us share– developers didn’t want items that give players any type of unfair advantage, and they didn’t want to require players to use the shop in order to enjoy the game as it stood. Many of us breathed a sigh of relief knowing ArenaNet was on the same page we were.

During the last beta weekend, we were able to steal a glimpse of many of the items intended for the shop. Many testers were even able to play around with the actual currency, and get a feel for how the intricate system works. Here’s a look at the items available so far, the system itself, and my personal thoughts on how the Gem Store is shaping up currently:

Gem Store Items

So far, the store has six different tabs of unique items: Style, Consumable, Support, Account, Boosts, and Minis. Most of them are pretty self-explanatory. Let’s start at the top, with the Style tab. Click on any of these images to bring up a full-size screenshot. Items are listed in the order of appearance.

Style Tab

Carnival Ringmaster’s Hat – The hat of a carnival ring master – 200 gems
Cook’s Outfit – Get cooking with this 5 piece outfit (hat, shirt, pants, boots, gloves) – 700 gems
Fine Transmutation Stone – One Use. Combine the appearance of one item with the attributes of another. Items must be of the same type. Usable on all item levels – 200 gems for 5, 360 gems for 10, 800 gems for 25
Transmutation Stone – One Use. Combine the appearance of one item with the attributes of another. Items must be of the same type. Usable on items up to level 79 – 200 gems for 5, 360 gems for 10, 800 gems for 25
Pirate Mate’s Outfit – Is a pirate’s life for you? If so, this outfit (hat, shirt, pants, boots, gloves, toy sword) has what you need. Wear all the pieces and gain access to 5 pirate themed skills! – 700 gems
Scholar’s Outfit – Show off your smarts with this 2 piece scholar’s outfit (shirt, pants) – 300 gems

Yep, plenty of cosmetic items. I think the transmutation stone approach is pretty smart. MMOs keep trying all sorts of new ideas for wardrobe and costume features, but these stones offer up a simple solution that utilizes the Gem Store well.

Consumable Tab

Dye Pack – Each dye box contains 3 random dyes (2 common and 1 uncommon). Once a dye has been unlocked on a character it can be used as many times as you like to color armor and town clothes. Collect them all! – 150 gems
Magic Plant Food – Grows a colorful seed into a dye plant instantly – 50 gems
Mystic Key – This key will unlock one Mystic Chest. Mystic Chests can be found randomly on enemies or in hidden places in the world – 125 gems

A couple of things to note here. First of all, reusable dyes that act as a feature to unlock instead of silly items that need to be hauled around is a solid idea, if you ask me. I’m not sure why they’re per character, but that’s really my only complaint about the game’s dye system. I really like being able to go to my equipment screen and pick an armor color, instead of fussing with materials, crafting, inventory space, and bank space.

The Mystic Keys? They also drop off mobs around Tyria. They seem fairly rare, and random, but they’re out there. So no, these keys aren’t a “shop-only” feature.

Support Tab

Asuran Bank Portal – Each portal allows access to your bank from anywhere once – 35 gems for 1, 125 gems for 5
Instant Repair Canister – Each canister fully repairs your items without the need of a repair merchant. This item cannot be used while in a Dungeon – 70 gems for 1, 300 gems for 5
Perfect Salvage Kit – This kit is guaranteed to remove upgrades from any sort of armor, weapon, or trinket and give the best chance of quality material returns – 35 gems for 1, 125 gems for 5
Resurrection Orb – Revives your character from death slowly. This item cannot be used in World vs World or PvP – 250 gems

Pretty standard stuff here. A lot of items that save time, which is one of the “safe” perks of a cash shop.

Account Tab

Unlock Bag Slot – Add an extra bag slot to your inventory. Each character can have up to 7 bag slots – 400 gems
Unlock Bank Tab – Add additional storage to your bank (30 slots.) Any character on your account can access the storage in your bank. You can have up to 8 bank tabs on your account – 600 gems

Here’s where things start to get a little interesting. Bag space, while arguably minor, impacts the gaming experience of many MMORPG players. It impacts leveling, crafting, and endgame activities. Without purchasing these unlocks, players will be forced to only have 5 slots. GW2 isn’t one of those games where loot is extremely rare, either. I don’t really see this one as optional, but that may be just my opinion. The good news? Gems and gold are a cross-currency of sorts, so it isn’t required to purchase Gems using real money. More on that later.

The bad news? Did you happen to notice we only have 5 character slots per server, while there are 8 professions to choose from? Yeah. I see those being purchasable as well. Kind of a bummer, honestly, but I guess we should have seen it coming, along with bag slots and bank tabs.

Boosts Tab

Crafting Boost – Improves your chance to score extra experience from crafting items by 50% for one hour – 150 gems
Experience Boost – Gain an additional 50% experience from kills for one hour – 150 gems
Karma Boost – Gain an additional 50% karma each time you gain karma for one hour – 75 gems
Killstreak Experience Boost – Gain an additional 100% experience from kills for 30 seconds. Time remaining is reset with each kill – 125 gems
Magic Find Boost – Improves your chance to get rare loot by 50% for one hour – 150 gems

These are interesting. The experiences boosts seem extremely negligible, which is a good thing. The Magic Find boost really doesn’t seem to add on a whole lot, considering the base chance to find rare loot is fairly low. The Karma boost? That could be very useful. Altogether, these boosts are acceptable. They don’t affect stats, damage, or survivability, and really, one hour isn’t a long time. I don’t foresee many players seeing these as required.

Minis Tab

Minis Pack – This pack comes with 3 randomly selected Minis (2 common and 1 uncommon) to add to your collection. Minis are tiny models of your favorite monsters and characters from the world of Tyria – 300 gems

Ah, yes. The obligatory “cute little item” collectable that will cause players everywhere to squee and grab every single one. At the same time. Possibly. Maybe not. Either way, they won’t harm anything. Collect to your heart’s content.

We may, of course, see future items, categories, and changes in the months to come.

Currency System

One of the most unique aspects about GW2′s Gem Store is the fact that it’s not only possible to purchase Gems using real money, but it’s possible to purchase and sell Gems using in-game gold, as well. The market for this exchange will also shift based on the purchasing habits of players. The actual rate for purchasing Gems will be based on how many gems were sold by other players, and for what prices. This means that basically, our economy will be up to us.

It also means that if we want to say, buy the extra bag slots and bank tabs, we don’t have to use real money. We can simply level up, save up some gold, and use the funds that way, similar to other MMOs that require players to purchase bank tabs or rows of inventory slots that are increasingly expensive. It also gives players who find themselves overstocked with gold a chance to play the market, and sell Gems to other players.

This could have interesting consequences, especially when it comes to a player-driven market. Let’s also remember, of course, that we’re not only dealing with gold and Gems as our only in-game currencies. There’s also Karma. Most directly-purchasable items and equipment that affect stats seem to come from Karma. That’s a good thing. Keep the items granting stats and combat efficiency away from the Gem/gold marketplace, and hopefully, the system will keep itself in check.

As a player has seen cash shops ruin some awesome games, I admittedly approached GW2′s Gem Store a little warily. So far, however, I’m pleasantly surprised at most of the ways in which it swerves away from the red flags, and shoots toward a new vision entirely. It’ll be interesting to see ArenaNet’s continued plans for the system, and see how it develops as we experience more beta weekend-goodness.
